Barry Martyn - 1941-2023

Barry's funeral will be held August 1, 2023 at 2p.

The funeral procession will begin with Benny Jones’ Treme Brass Band starting at 1.30pm at Tuba Fats Square 1600 St Philip 70116 (cross st. N.Robertson)

and will proceed  to

The Charbonnet funeral home
1615 St Philip, New Orleans 70116

We ask that for this first part of the funeral that this is just the band. No guest musicians and nobody joining in from the street on an instrument. However all musicians are welcome after the service ends on our parade back to the starting point. So bring your horns, drums and whatever along for that part afterwards please.

The service will begin at 2pm and will last approximately one hour

Ben will play music in the service with New Orleans musicians and friends of Barry’s

There will be speeches from Emile, Barry’s friend and neighbour Jon Cleary, John Royen and others.

Then all musicians are invited to parade back to The Candlelight Lounge adjacent to Tuba Fats Square which will open for us

The event will be live streamed on our bands Facebook page thefallenheroesband

BARRY MARTYN

Barry Martyn has been a jazz drummer, bandleader, producer, and historian for over 65 years. His expertise, passion and collection make him the go to for writing album liner notes, identifying people in old photos, and educating the next generation about the music and music makers. He is one of a precious few who has devoted his life to preserving and sharing the music.

All of us who are either musicians and/or lovers of New Orleans music owe Barry a big debt of gratitude – to use a well-worn but accurate expression – Barry doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk. (Bruce Raeburn)
